Jamila looked up from her cereal to see the form of Jessica striding toward the food line. In an effort to avoid the confrontation she knew had to come, she darted up and past several occupied tables, leaving her still full bowl on the bench and disappeared into the nearest hallway. Her heart hammered loudly. For days she hadn’t been able to think of anything except that kiss with Jessica. 

If it wasn’t bad enough that she couldn’t get Jessica out of her head, she knew the rules and she couldn’t ruin her job or Jessica’s for something that probably meant nothing. It was just a kiss. 

Besides, she barely knew Jessica. They’d talked twice.

Jamila was still considering this when the object of her thoughts appeared in her eye line. 

“Hey, you’re not avoiding me are you?”

Jamila shook her head, she had temporarily lost the ability to speak.

“Look, about the other day. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it.” Jamila nodded. 

“It’s fine. We don’t need to talk about it.”

“Good. Great. I really liked hanging out with you the other week and I thought maybe we could talk more about hair… or other stuff.”

Jamila nodded, though what she really wanted was to shake her head. Getting closer to Jessica sounded far too much like trouble. 

“Great. If you’re working now, maybe we could hang out tonight?” Seeing the look on Jamila’s face, Jessica continued, “Okay, that’s too soon, um, maybe we could do Thursday night?”

“Sure. Great. Look, I’m late. Come by on Thursday night.”

Jamila hastened down the tight hallway and was three decks away before she paid much attention to where she was going.
