“Seriously? They picked today of all days for my reception to not work?” Pippa glared at the phone in her hand. The little wifi symbol showed nothing. They were too far out to get phone reception. It was her grandpa’s birthday and she couldn’t even call.

“Babe, I’m sure he’ll understand. He’s really old and he probably won’t remember if you call or not.”

Pippa sighed. “Yeah.” She couldn’t tell Yasmin the real reason she was so upset. Saying it out loud would make it all feel too real.

“Come on, let’s go grab something yummy and try him again a little later.”

Pippa mustered up a weak smile and slipped her phone in her pocket.

“Maybe there will be better wifi on deck.”

“That’s the spirit.”

The wifi in the cafe was no better. Her phone continued showing no wifi.

Her plate of nachos sat in front of her uneatern. Even the smell made her feel ill.

“This whole trip was such a huge mistake. We never should have come.”

“It was your idea.” Yasmin’s even voice did little to calm her. The panic rising from her chest knew no bounds.

“Yeah. A bad one.”

“Honey, I know you’re worried about missing your grandpa’s birthday, but you can’t take it out on me.”

Pippa nodded. The truth threatened to tumble from her lips.

Fat tears welled in her eyes. “What if… what if it’s his last birthday?” her voice was barely loud enough for Yasmin to make out, she half hoped her wife wouldn’t be able to make it out. Maybe it would stay an idea she could ignore.

The moment it tumbled out though, she knew. There was a good chance it would be his last birthday. She’d chosen a stupid cruise over her grandpa. She might never see him again.

“Honey, he’s been sick for a while. That was always a possibility.”

Pippa sniffled.

“I just. I love him so much. I know it would be kinder to let him go. He hasn’t been himself for so long, but I don’t want him to.”

Yasmin nodded. “You’ll never be ready for him to go. Not really.”
